Ol Pejeta Conservancy sits right between the Aberdares and Mount Kenya, covering a massive 90,000 acres. And it packs a punch.

So you're going to Ol Pejeta. Great choice.

This isn't your typical safari spot. It sits right between the Aberdares and Mount Kenya, covering a massive 90,000 acres. And it packs a punch: the Big Five, the rarest rhinos on Earth, and Kenya's only chimpanzee sanctuary – all in one place.

Here’s the real deal on what you’ll see.

The Big Five (All of Them – Yes, Really)

Ol Pejeta is one of the few places in Kenya where you can spot all five big names in a single day. Here's the lineup:

  • Rhino – they're the stars here (more on that in a sec)
  • Elephant – big herds wandering the plains
  • Lion – six prides, about 72 lions total – you've got good odds
  • Leopard – shy but around (roughly 20 live here)
  • Buffalo – huge herds grazing out in the open

Heads-up: Ol Pejeta has some of the highest predator numbers in Kenya. So besides lions, you've got a solid chance of seeing cheetahs (about 30 of them) and even the rare African wild dog.

The Rhinos: This Is the Main Event

If Ol Pejeta is famous for one thing, it's rhino conservation. This place is East Africa's largest black rhino sanctuary, and the numbers are mind-blowing.

As of late 2024, there are 225 rhinos here – that's 176 eastern black rhinos and 46 southern white rhinos.

But wait – here's the jaw-dropper. Ol Pejeta is the last home of the world's only remaining northern white rhinos. Just two females are left, and they live under 24/7 armed guard. Seeing them is moving – you won't forget it.

And then there's Baraka, a blind black rhino who lives in a special enclosure. He's a total crowd-pleaser and loves being hand-fed. A must-see.

Chimps? In Kenya? Yep – Only Here

Here's something you won't see anywhere else in the country: chimpanzees.

The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary was set up in 1993 to rescue chimps from the illegal bushmeat and pet trades. Many of them had been traumatised by their human "owners" and can never go back to the wild.

Today, about 29 chimps call this sanctuary home. You can watch them up close – including during feeding – and learn their stories from the dedicated caregivers.

Fun fact: We share 98.6% of our DNA with chimps. Watching them play, hug, and even walk upright feels weirdly like looking in a mirror.

More Than Just the Famous Faces

Ol Pejeta is packed with classic safari animals too. Keep your eyes peeled for:

  • Grevy's zebra – the biggest and rarest zebra species
  • Giraffe – those elegant towers striding across the plains
  • Gazelles (Thomson's and Grant's) – speedy little antelope everywhere
  • Jackson's hartebeest – another rare find here
  • Oryx, eland, waterbuck, ostrich – the list goes on and on

And birders, rejoice – there are hundreds of bird species flitting about. Binoculars are a must.

Things to Do (Beyond the Game Drive)

Sure, you can do the classic open-roof 4×4 drive. But Ol Pejeta has way more to offer:

  • Lion tracking – tag along with rangers who use a receiver to find collared lions. You'll help with real conservation work.
  • Walking safaris – get out of the vehicle and stretch your legs on foot.
  • Horseback safaris – see the landscape from a different angle.
  • Chimpanzee behind-the-scenes – go deeper into the sanctuary and learn what it takes to care for these amazing apes.
  • Cross the equator – literally. There's a sign. Snap that classic photo.

Ol Pejeta is a genuine conservation win. Every visitor who comes through helps fund rhino protection, chimp care, and anti-poaching efforts. You're not just watching wildlife – you're actively helping to save it.

So pack your camera, bring your curiosity, and get ready for a safari that's as heartwarming as it is thrilling.

Laikipia's wild side is calling – and it's waiting just for you.
