Planning a dream safari to the Masai Mara National Reserve? If you are budgeting for your trip, the park entry rules have shifted significantly. The old flat rates of $70 to $80 are gone, replaced by a strict seasonal structure set by the Narok County Government.

The Official Fee Structure

The table below details daily per-person entry fees based on your residency status and the time of year:

Visitor Category

Low Season (Jan 1 – June 30)

Peak Season (July 1 – Dec 31)

Non-Resident Adult

USD 100 / day

USD 200 / day

Non-Resident Child (Ages 9–17)

USD 50 / day

USD 50 / day

East African Resident Adult

KES 2,500 / day

KES 5,000 / day

Kenyan Citizen Adult

KES 1,500 / day

KES 3,000 / day

Toddlers & Young Kids: Children aged 8 and under enter entirely free.
Identification: Kenyan Citizens must present a valid National ID, and East African Residents (Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan) must show a passport with a valid resident visa or work permit.

Hidden Costs: Vehicle and Camping Fees

Your individual entry ticket is just the first step. You also need to budget for how you get in and where you sleep.

1. Vehicle Entry Fees

Vehicles are charged a separate flat fee per day depending on their carrying capacity:

  • Private Cars (< 6 seats): KES 1,000 per day.
  • Safari Vans / 4x4 Land Cruisers: KES 1,500 per day. 2. Surcharges for Campers

If you opt to pitch a tent instead of booking an all-inclusive luxury lodge, you will need to add these nightly fees:

  • Public Campsites: USD 30 per night for non-residents / KES 1,000 for citizens.
  • Private Campsites: USD 40 per night for non-residents / KES 1,000 for citizens.

The Three Rules Every Traveler Must Know

1. The 12-Hour Rule (The 10:00 AM Trap)

Tickets are no longer valid for 24 hours. Your park entry ticket operates on a 12-hour cycle (6:00 AM to 6:00 PM). Furthermore, guests departing the reserve by road must exit through the gates by 10:00 AM on their final day. If you leave at noon, you will be forced to pay for a completely new day.

2. Where You Stay Doesn't Lower the Fee

Under the older management systems, staying at a lodge inside the reserve occasionally yielded minor fee adjustments. Now, everyone pays the exact same reserve entry fee, regardless of whether your accommodation is a budget tent outside the gates or a $1,500-a-night luxury camp inside.

3. Reserve vs. Mara Triangle vs. Conservancies

"The Masai Mara" is not one giant park under a single ticket.

Governed by Narok County; uses the $100 / $200 structure.

The western section. It shares the same pricing but is a strictly cashless zone. You must pay via card or pre-generated e-tickets.

Private Conservancies

(Like Mara North or Naboisho). These are community-owned borders with separate daily fees (usually $80 to $130). These are typically bundled directly into your lodge's nightly accommodation rate.

Pro-Tip For Booking

Always request a fully itemized quote from your safari operator before paying. Ensure they explicitly break out whether park entry fees, vehicle fees, and taxes are included in your package or if you are expected to pay them directly in cash at the Sekenani Gate.
